Blacksburg is committed to building, renovating, and maintaining its facilities in an environmentally friendly manner.

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) established the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System in 1998 to measure a building’s ecological footprint. LEED is just one of many sustainable building certifications that a contractor or homeowner can obtain, but it is one of the most, if not the most, recognized worldwide.

Blacksburg has committed to utilizing the LEED certification process for all new construction projects or renovation efforts to existing town buildings when the gross occupied area of a building is 5,000 square feet or greater. Additionally, all qualifying projects shall achieve LEED-NC, (New Construction), Silver certification, or higher.

The town fully recognizes the importance of preserving our unique environment for generations to come and embraces the chance to become a more sustainable community through the employment of the LEED certification process for town facilities.
